Part One: Initial Consultation
When Rachel brought us in for the initial consultation, we could see that her master bathroom had more going on beneath the surface.
Rachel knew she wanted something better. What she didn’t know yet was how much of the existing space was holding that back.
That’s what the consultation is for.
We walked through every corner of that bathroom and came out with a clear picture of what had to go, what had to move, and the right sequence of work.
By the time we left, Rachel had stopped wondering if her bathroom could be better. She knew exactly what it was going to become.
Some issues with the old bathroom were…

Space-eating closet
The closet was built into the bathroom’s footprint, blocking what could have been a generous, open layout.

Outdated bidet
An unused bidet occupied valuable floor space.

Poor ventilation
The exhaust fan was located far from the shower, where moisture builds up.

Inadequate lighting
The lighting layout left dead zones over the shower, tub, and vanity.

Compromised subfloor
Once the flooring came up, the existing subfloor couldn’t support the new large-format tile.
Part Two: Design, Planning, and Permitting
We start with a $2,500 design package that covers everything: measurements, 3D renderings, floor plans, and construction drawings.
The design eliminated the closet entirely, capped the bidet lines, repositioned the plumbing for the tub and vanity, and mapped a completely new lighting and ventilation layout.
This upfront fee becomes complimentary once Rachel approves the design and signs on to the construction schedule.
Part Three: The Time Schedule
Here’s the full timeline of how the project moved from the first conversation to a finished bathroom:
March 19
Design package completed (including an on-site survey, 3D renderings, full construction drawings, and a finalized materials list.)
April 8
Demolition begins. Toilet, vanity, shower stall, wall finishes, and flooring removed. Closet framing cut and deleted. Bidet lines capped.
April – June
Framing, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins came first, followed by fire blocking, insulation, and drywall. Once the shell was ready, the Schluter waterproofing system went in, then large-format tile, mosaic accents, and the custom frameless glass enclosure.
June 12
Subfloor correction change order completed: old subfloor demolished to bare joists, blocking added for perimeter support, interlocking subfloor panels installed with adhesive and screws.
June 18
Final cabinetry updates completed. Dual undermount sinks and quartz countertop installed. LED mirror connected. Final walkthrough, punch list executed, deep clean, and post-project documentation.

Schluter Waterproofing System
Most tile showers fail eventually because the waterproofing fails first. Rachel’s shower is built on a prefabricated Schluter pan with KERDI membrane on every wall, KERDI-BAND at all seams, and Ditra uncoupling membrane across the main floor. Every layer is designed to move independently so cracks don’t form and water never finds a path behind the tile.

Large-Format Tile and Mosaic Accents
The shower walls are covered in large-format tile, which creates a cleaner look and is easier to maintain. The shower floor and the interior of the lighted niche use mosaic tile, which adds texture and visual interest in the right places. The same tile runs through the bench and curb faces for a cohesive, built-in feel.

Custom Frameless Glass Enclosure
After the tile was fully set and cured, a specialist came out for field measurements. The frameless glass panels and door were fabricated to fit the finished opening, not a standard size, and installed with clear water-resistant sealants. The result is a shower that looks open from every angle.
Key Project features

Hi! I’m Thomas Cougan, owner of Renewal Solutions. I’m a firefighter, father of four, and someone who understands what it means to start over and build something better.
After 255+ bathroom remodels across Monmouth County, I still hear the same thing from homeowners at that first consultation: they’re nervous.
They’ve heard the horror stories. They don’t know who will show up, stay communicative, and finish what they started.
Renewal Solutions exists because those homeowners deserve better.
I built this company around the standard I’d hold any contractor to if they were working in my own home: clear communication, reliable scheduling, and a finished product the whole family is proud of.
